Our Vision The long-term vision of the Valley of the Sun Community Diaper Bank is a community where every vulnerable person has his or her basic needs met. In the short term, we accomplish this by providing diapers - a necessity not covered by the safety net programs. To work toward long-term change, we raise awareness of the issues facing vulnerable populations - our community's disabled, elderly and babies. Our History Fall 2002: Local volunteers met with founders of Southern Arizona Community Diaper Bank to discuss the creation of a diaper bank in the Valley of the Sun. Spring 2003: With assistance from St. Luke's Health Initiative, the Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust, St. Mary's Food Bank and The Arizona Republic, volunteers organized our first month-long diaper drive. Summer 2003: Board of Directors formed Spring 2004: Received 501(c)(3) status As of June 2008: 950,636 diapers distributed. Our Model The community diaper bank model, first brought to life in Tucson by the Southern Arizona Community Diaper Bank, is truly unique. We know that people and families who need diapers probably need other social services as well. Instead of reinventing another social service delivery system, we provide diapers to existing organizations that work with people in need. Our partners include crisis nurseries, domestic violence shelters, food banks, head start programs, senior centers, and congregations from a variety of religious affiliations. |
